What is a SPA?

SpaAsia’s definition of a ‘Spa’ is a place where:

  • A person goes to improve their wellness in body, mind and spirit
  • The spa operator and all their staff make a connection with the guest in body, mind and spirit
  • The spa experience is delivered to guests through the vehicles of their five senses
  • The guest's expectations of wellness are met
  • The business is driven with integrity and a commitment to quality

Understanding this definition of a ‘spa’ is important in making a nomination. Please read the Categories and Submission Criteria thoroughly before submitting your entry form.

Spa Categories
DAY SPAS
Refer to day facilities catering mostly to local clientele. It is a stand-alone operation and does not offer accommodation. Its spa menu offers an hour or a couple of hours to a full day treatment package that ranges from facials to therapeutic massages. Therapies may vary from pampering beauty to holistic therapies but customized to shorter multiple visits.

DESTINATION SPAS
Refer to an all encompassing dedicated spa and wellness facility. Accommodation is a supporting facility to the spa activities. The menu offers an all-inclusive programme for health, longevity, wellness and beauty – such as weight loss, stress management, yoga and meditation – that integrate fitness, spa treatments, healthy cuisine and lifestyle consultation. Average stays range from a few days to a week or longer.

HOTEL SPAS
Refer to urban spas within city hotels. The spa menu is dedicated to day treatments or a quick pampering fix for beauty and wellness. It ranges from budget to luxury, pampering beauty to holistic wellness.

RESORT SPAS
Refer to dedicated spa facilities within a resort. It offers a more extensive menu that includes packages or programmes that cater for a few days or more. The resort spa is secondary to the hotel and residences.

WELLNESS RETREATS
Refers to destinations that go beyond the usual spa resort offerings. They are cultivated as a retreat, be it for health, emotional or spiritual aspect or motivation. The programmes are designed as a unique and permanent guide towards a lifestyle change – focusing on the overall health and longevity of the body, mind and soul. At best, it is in keeping with the latest in luxury, style and comfort. This category also incorporates destinations that have the natural potential to allow one to journey inwards for self discovery and inner soul search – a place that encourages the seeking of balance within, through its therapeutic natural ambience.
